1 Samuel 12: You want a king, you got it

Synopsis:

Samuel tells everyone – am I not an honest man?  Yes, yes you are.  Well – then hear this. God has helped you – as long as you stay true to him, he has made sure there were people to protect you. When you stray, he harms you.  He was your king, but you have asked him to give you a different one. So here is Saul, your new king.  As long as you stay true to God and to Saul, you will be fine. Stray and worship other gods and you shall be consumed, both you and your king.

In other words:

God gives Israel a king, but he isn’t happy about it.

Favorite bit:

1 Samuel 12:12 – When ye saw that Nahash the king of the children on Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay: but a king shall reign over us: when the Lord your God was your King.

Least favorite bit:

The threats of what happens when you don’t obey god. It’s really abusive. Not only will he not help, he will actively harm you. It’s really abusive. All I hear when I read this is an abusive spouse hitting his wife yelling – why are you making me hurt you!

Moral Lesson Learned:

You get the government you deserve (1 Samuel 12:12)
