Joshua 23: Joshua on his death bed

Synopsis:

Joshua is old and getting ready to die. He calls everyone together to tell them to be good and that God will reward them, if they don’t, God will turn his back on them. And when I say he will turn his back on you, I mean, he will smite you the way he has smote your enemies so far. So don’t even think of transgressing against Him.

In other words:

Joshua is getting ready to die so he issues a warning to obey God or perish from this earth.

Favorite bit:

As blessing/curses go, it’s pretty good.

Least favorite bit:

That it is ultimately a curse. (Joshua 23: 16)

Quote most likely to be taken out of context:

(Joshua 23: 10) One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.”  Again, I can see how these “you aren’t alone in your fight” quotes can be considered inspiring, but seriously, as a Humanist, these quotes just scare me because all I can think of is religious terrorists.

Moral Lesson:

Be good, or else.

or

If you are going to bless someone, bless them. Don't curse them and pretend it's a blessing. That's just rude.
